Jeffrey Stirling has conducted symphonic concerts and opera in North America and Europe. He is known for his extensive repertoire and inventive programming. Stirling began his musical studies in New Jersey and holds degrees from Yale and Northwestern universities. He pursued advanced training at the Tanglewood and Salzburg music festivals, and at the Paris Conservatory. At the invitation of Leonard Slatkin, Stirling participated in the National Conducting Institute with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C., and he has conducted in master classes with Pierre Boulez and Marin Alsop. Stirling’s teachers have included Seiji Ozawa, Victor Yampolsky and the late Charles Bruck. Stirling has appeared with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and been a cover conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra. He has guest conducted the Duluth-Superior Symphony and other regional orchestras in the Midwest and New England. Stirling is currently music director of several community-based ensembles including the Saint Paul Civic Symphony and the Northeast Orchestra. He also conducts for the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies. Stirling has conducted for Skylark Opera, the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul City Ballet and the 9/11 Tribute Orchestra. Stirling has conducted a number of college and university orchestras serving as Interim Director of Orchestral Studies at University of Minnesota, and directing the orchestral programs at St. Cloud State University, Luther College and Gustavus Adolphus College. He has also been guest faculty at St. Olaf College. Stirling lives in Saint Paul with his wife Shari Speer, a professional soprano, choral conductor and voice teacher. |
