Concert Description:
Some music is created to entertain people, and some music conveys a powerful statement of a composer. The music of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich was their message and testimony, a reflection of the society in which they lived. Tchaikovsky, in his Sixth Symphony, expressed his hopeless view of life with sorrow, longing, courage, and despair. Shostakovich’s Festive Overture displays optimism of the people’s life under the Soviet regime. On the contrary, his Violin Concerto No. 1 expresses fear, cruelty, sorrow, and parody; the concerto became his testimony to what he experienced. |
